This weekend was dedicated to spending some quality time with my DSLR and some aimless wondering around the neighbourhood in the hope that we would bond. The relationship has been a little rocky to begin with as I think my heart lies with film. There are just so many buttons and my least favourite word when it comes to a camera - 'functions'! Anyway - I'm trying to keep it simple, shoot on 'M' and cross my fingers!

I'm sitting here fumbling around with my fancy new Canon DSLR and I'm starting to panic! I'm so in love with shooting film on my very beautiful and very uncomplicated Nikon FM2 that I think I may struggle getting to know this new medium!

I'm trying to keep in the same headspace of shooting with my Nikon – after all photography has always been about aperture, shutter speed and ISO all carefully balanced to create correct exposure... now, if only I could find those buttons!

Here are few things I've shot around Melbourne using film. Perhaps the next post will be about my love of my new digital camera!

My all time favourite cafe slash restaurant slash bar! Cavallero you have not disappointed since the day you opened. Oh, except that time you took the bacon and egg sandwich off the menu without any warning. Luckily you replaced it with the Collingwood meatballs which seems to be a better match to your Bloody Mary anyway. Disaster averted.

Auckland + Melbourne + Shoot by Design

I have just completed a 6 week online photography course run by Sydney photographer (now residing in Vancouver) Amanda Gilligan.  I have followed Amanda's blog Mocking-bird for some time now and there has always been something about her images that really resonated with me. When she announced she had created a course I jumped at the chance and enrolled.

I have to say the last 6 weeks has been an absolute creative joy! I learnt so much more than I expected not just technically but more about myself and why I love and NEED to stake pictures.

Not only was Amanda a fabulous teacher but having access to students from all over the world with a similar passions and fears was a gift that seemed to come to me at a time when I really needed it.

I have already posted some of the shots I've taken over the last six weeks. Our last assignment was to collaborate with another student. Mary based in Auckland and I decided to share our neighborhoods - this is some of what we came up with. This was a lot of fun and definitely something I'd love to explore further...

Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to live smack bang in the middle of Melbourne. Always taking it for granted we are more often than not in the middle of a love hate relationship. Some mornings I wake up and like to pretend I've just landed here and try to see this town for the first time, so rather than burying my head in a book in a cafe as I usually do - I decided to look up....
