saving the details

I'm naturally a 'big picture' person but I'm becoming more interested in remembering and documenting certain details. Its not a fear of forgetting but more a matter of trying to hold onto a certain feeling or moment before it changes. This is just a snippet of specific things in my grandparent's home that I feel are imprinted somewhere deep in my soul.

PS isn't film just lovely!

I'm sitting here fumbling around with my fancy new Canon DSLR and I'm starting to panic! I'm so in love with shooting film on my very beautiful and very uncomplicated Nikon FM2 that I think I may struggle getting to know this new medium!

I'm trying to keep in the same headspace of shooting with my Nikon – after all photography has always been about aperture, shutter speed and ISO all carefully balanced to create correct exposure... now, if only I could find those buttons!

Here are few things I've shot around Melbourne using film. Perhaps the next post will be about my love of my new digital camera!

the end of the roll

 

I always get to about 30 shots on a roll of film then just want to finish it as quickly as possible so I can have it processed. It's almost as if those last 6 shots don't really matter as its all about getting that film out of the camera.

I was in the same predicament the other day so I chose some random objects (including the discards of my dinner preparation!) and snapped away. It took all of 10 minutes. For someone that over-thinks everything - especially when it comes to a creative outcome it was really liberating to shoot away with the freedom of not worrying about the consequences. Definitely some food for thought moving forward!

castlemaine details

Castlemaine is only about an hour and a half out of Melbourne. I often visit when things get claustrophobic here and I need a little space. Its one of those quintessential Australian country towns with wide streets, roadside apple stores, home-made jam and lets not forget The Country Women's Association!

We drove there on Sunday which seems a long way to go for a glass of wine and a mooch around vintage stores (which is pretty much how I spend time here in Melbourne on a quiet weekend!). It did however spark up that 'is it time for a tree change?' conversation which comes up every time we're somewhere peaceful but tend to forget the minute we hit home again!

and then the rain came in

 

The weather has finally turned here in Melbourne and that has made me a little bit excited. Its not so much the grey days that I love but there is something about this time of year that makes me feel weirdly content.

These are the things that I will enjoy as they days get shorter and colder;

• Gumboots in the rain
• Cashmere gloves
• Scotch on ice late at night
• Red wine under an outdoor heater
• Day long slow cooking
• Book books books
• Creating collages
• Guilt free DVD marathons
• Day trips to empty beaches

its just science

A friend of mine teaches science at a lovely school in Melbourne. Visiting his class room made me  a little nostalgic for those days where looking back now, everything was so simple.

I was never a science nerd but I did hide myself away in the art room with my 2 best friends. Even back then I was searching for something different from where I was and what I was doing. I wish I could tell my high school self that was going to be a theme that would follow me forever!

a little bit of yellow trace

Nothing makes me happier than coming home to a room full of yellow trace, masking tape, pens and rulers. It always amazes me that all of these really simple things along with a lot of thinking, scratching and passion for the details can turn a piece of paper into a building that will actually stand somewhere for a very long time.
